What's a Profile?

Your profile is basically your identity on the Sify network. It's something by which others can know a little more about you. Your profile allows you to enter information about yourself that you would like other users / visitors to know. Your profile is created when you sign up as a Sify user.

Can I change my profile? What's an 'alias'?

Though you can't change your main profile ID, i.e. the profile attached to the ID that you signed up with, you can create up to 2 additional profiles if you so desire. Each of these additional profiles or 'aliases' allows you to enter different information for each, so you can have a separate name, email ID, gender and other content for each.

Aliases can help you maintain your anonymity and switch your personality depending on which community tools you are using or which of your peer groups you are interacting with. This means that you can chat under one name and participate in a discussion using a different one.

An alias name is as unique as your Sify ID and once created, cannot be replicated by any other user.

What's my default profile?

When you sign up as a Sify user, your user ID automatically becomes the default profile that you can sign in with and use across various community services (chat, discussions etc.) available across the Sify network.

Setting a profile as your default makes that ID appear automatically as the name that you log in with and participate in any of Sify's community services.

Any time you choose to, you can change your default ID to any one of your aliases or additional profiles, if you have created any, by clicking on the 'Default' link against that profile on the 'Edit my Profile' page.

What happens if I create an alias name and don't use it?

In order to be fair to other users who might want to use an alias name that you may already have, we deactivate all aliases that have been 'idle' for more than 6 months from the date of its creation. This deactivated alias name is then open for selection and use by any other name.

Remember, it's only the alias name that you lose, and not your Sify ID.
