'1.31 lakh jobs lost in Q2'

New Delhi: The downturn continues to hit the employment situation, with over a lakh jobs estimated to have been lost in the second quarter of this year, according to a survey by the Labour Bureau for April-June 2009.

An estimated 1.31 lakh jobs were lost during the latest reported quarter, even as signs of improvement in the employment scenario were seen the preceding quarter.
About 5 lakh jobs were estimated to have been lost by the Bureau's survey for the October-December period last year even as the follow-up survey for the January-March period this year showed a growth in employment by 2.80 lakh.

The latest survey shows that while the overall employment declined by well over a lakh during April to June, on a month-to-month basis, the situation improved marginally in June. Employment declined by 38,000 jobs in April, followed by 1.57 lakh in May, even as June saw an increase of 64,000 jobs.
"Shortage of workers during the period is experienced every year as the migrant workers prefer to visit their place of origin resulting in their less availability during this period," the survey said.

About 3,003 units were surveyed for the April-June survey across eight labour-intensive sectors, including textiles, gems and jewellery and leather. Unemployment rose the sharpest in textiles at 1.52 lakh, followed by IT (48,000) and gems and jewellery (28,000).
