New Delhi: 64 senior citizens looking forward to their first joyous overseas trip were duped by a Mumbai-based travel agent.

The senior citizens had been looking forward to their trip to Dubai, and to visit the exotic locations in the Gulf city. But all their aspirations came to a grinding halt with the tour operator cancelling the trip just one day prior to departure.

The would-be tourists had booked a foreign trip after coming across an ad in a national daily. Preparations were in full swing and Rs 18 lakh from savings had already been arranged for the trip.

The agent Nrupathy Manay hailing from Mumbai called off the trip claiming the money raised was insufficient to meet their expenses.

The wannabe travellers were part of a local senior association in Dwarka and Balbir Singh Yadav the association's President was quoted in a report in the Indian Express as saying that Manay had committed to offer a five-night six day trip at a cost or Rs 37800 per person. Post the cancellation of the trip, Manay was expected to return the amount, but he did not.

A formal police complaint has been lodged at a Police station in New Delhi. A senior officer said that a contact has been established with the tour operator and there have been efforts to arrest him although he now claims that he will offer a full refund.

Cops suggested that efforts are on way to bring Manay to Delhi in the coming two days.
