New Delhi: 64 senior citizens looking forward to their joyous first overseas trip were duped by a Mumbai based travel agent.
The senior citizens had been looking forward to their trip to Dubai, and visit the exotic locations in the Gulf city. But all their aspirations came to a grinding halt with the tour operator cancelling the trip just one day prior to the departure.
The would-be tourists had booked a foreign trip after coming across an ad in a national daily. Preparations were in full swing and Rs 18 lakh from savings had already been arranged for the trip.
The agent Nrupathy Manay hailing from Mumbai called off the trip claiming the money raised was insufficient to meet their expenses.
The citizens are a part of a local senior association in Dwarka and Balbir Singh Yadav the association's President was quoted in a report in the Indian Express as saying that Manay had committed to offer a five-night six day trip at a cost or Rs 37800 per person. Manay, since the cancellation suggested that he would pay back the amount, but neither paid back the money nor delivered on the trip.
A formal police complaint has been lodged at a Police station in New Delhi. A senior officer said that a contact has been established with the tour operator and there have been efforts to arrest the accused trip operator although he claims that he will pay a full refund.
Cops suggested that efforts are on way to bring Manay to Delhi in the coming two days.
