Mahindra & Mahindra ended with a hefty gain of 8.4%, buoyed by the budget proposal to set up a National Mission for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles to encourage manufacturing and selling of alternative fuel-based vehicles in India.
Maruti Suzuki (7.15%) and Tata Motors (5.5%) ended with impressive gains on strong sales numbers.
Bajaj Auto ended 5.3% up and Hero Honda moved up by 1.9%.
Jaiprakash Associates notched up a gain of a little over 7%. NTPC ended 6.35% up.
Hindalco, ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Communications, DLF, Tata Steel, Sterlite Industries and HDFC Bank gained 4% - 6%. HDFC ended with a gain of 3.4%.
BHEL, State Bank of India, Infosys Technologies, ITC, Reliance Industries, Cipla, Bharti Airtel and Jindal Steel gained 2% - 3%.
