US President William Howard Taft's White Motor Company Model M-40 horse-power steam 7-passenger touring car.
Taft was the first US President to use motorcars exclusively instead of horse drawn transport while in office.
He purchased this vehicle for his own use with his own funds between his election and his inaguration.
The man seen at the driving wheel in this photo is not identified, but is likely Taft's official driver, George Robinson.
The photo was snapped up on the White House grounds; in the background is the State Department Building, since renamed the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
