People flock at malls for Christmas shopping in capital

The Christmas shopping bug has found its way along with festive cheer and shopping malls, restaurants are doling out deals to tap the market.

The festival has given a reason to the people to shop from clothes to accessories and wines to gifts.

"Honestly I think it's retail that's doing most of the celebration, so it has become more about shopping than anything else. Delhi has become all about not just celebrating, but retail has completely taken over the stage of the city," said Surabhi Sharma, a local.

"Everybody wants to just get out of their houses, come out, shop, and it's not restricted to the very rich people. People who just about middle class can also spruce themselves up, come out to the mall, just take in the good life," said Atul Puri, a shopper.

The month of December has seen a substantial increase of activity in shopping malls and markets, which retailers have been happy to see.

"People are shopping, coming here for New Year's. New Year's Eve is a big deal here. Everyone is shopping for parties. So there are a lot of crowds coming in right now for New Years and Christmas," said Gayatri Chopra, a local storeowner.

New Delhi's streets are decorated, while shops are all wrapped in Christmas colors to attract shoppers.

With Christmas having all the trappings of a perfect holiday season of gifts, chocolate and wine combined with warmth and festive cheer, people are happy to be part of the trend. (ANI)
