Bhubaneswar, Feb 16 (IANS) Non-Congress political parties, including the state's ruling Biju Janata Dal and the opposition BJP, Saturday organised separate protests in Odisha against the latest diesel and petrol price hike, police said.

Carrying placards and banners, the BJD legislators staged a demonstration near Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the assembly premises here, while hundreds of party workers carried out a march elsewhere in the city in the evening shouting slogans against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Similarly, the Bharatiya Janata Party activists carried out a separate rally in the city and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Oil marketing firms increased diesel and petrol prices respectively by 45 paise and Rs.1.50 per liter from Friday-Saturday midnight as there has been an increase in crude oil prices in international market.

The last revision in petrol and diesel prices was done Jan 18 this year, when the diesel price was increased by the same amount 45 paise per litre. However, petrol price was reduced by 25 paise per litre.
