Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee presented her fifth rail budget, her third as a UPA Minister, in parliament on Friday.
Following are highlights from the budget:
CHARGES, SOPS:
No increase in passenger fares in FY 2011/12.
No increase in freight rates in FY 2011/12.
Relief for senior citizens: Women from 58 onwards will can avail the senior-citizen benefits
Online ticketing charge reduced from Rs 20 to Rs 10 for AC and from Rs 10 to Rs 5 for non-AC
Launch of a multi-purpose pan-India smart card "Go India" to seamlessly pay for tickets for long distance, suburban and metro trains
Concession for physically handicapped and gallantry award winners for travel in Rajdhani and Shatabdi expresses.
50 percent concession for mediapersons with families to be increased from once to twice a year.
