Booking a trip to Ahmedabad? Make sure your travel and stay arrangements are double-checked for any disruption. A hotel association in Ahmedabad on Wednesday has been reported as boycotting online portals MakeMyTrip and GoIbibo. The association has alleged commission and indiscriminate discounts as reasons for the boycott.
The boycott is in effect from Dec 1, and a spokesperson for the Gujarat Chapter of Hotels and Restaurants Association was quoted as saying, "As decided, around 270 hotels in the city have stopped entertaining customers who had booked their rooms through these two portals,"
It is alleged that the portals have increased their commissions from 15-18% previously to 40-45%. Hoteliers also alleged that there was also that the component of customer discounts that ate their margins. The association is demanding portals to retain the commission at 15%.
GoIbibo's spokesperson quoted in a PTI story indicated that business was usual, making it look as if there was no impact over the boycott.
The association claimed that although the business from portals had increased in recent times, they [portals] should not dictate terms to us.
With nearly 270 hotels joining the call, the spokesperson from the association claimed that hoteliers from other cities such as Maharashtra are also expected to boycott the portals.
The organizers of the movement say that they do not want customers to feel inconvenienced, and "after he [customer] cancels his online booking, we will offer the room at the same rate that was offered by the portals."
