Kullu’s district magistrate has ordered to vest the two ‘benami’ (illegal) properties in the resort town of Manali and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh.
The two properties are estimated to cost around Rs 11 crore and are said to be in the name of Ajay Chautala, grandson of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal.
BM Nanta, DM Kullu, evoked Section 118 of the HP Land Reforms and Tenancy Act 1972 which forbids outsiders to buy agricultural land in the hill state without special permission from the government.
“Both the properties were bought in violation of state land laws and so would be vested with the state,” Nanta told Business Standard.
One of the properties is the Hotel Regent Holiday Home in Manali and the other is a 12-bigha empty patch of land on the outskirts of Kullu.
The land was bought in 1978. The case was pending in the DMs court for the last 14 years.
The DMs order came in a plea of RTI activists who had sought information of benami properties .
