Chennai: Engaging the Diaspora — the way forward is the theme for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, one of the biggest events aimed at involving Indians abroad in the economic development here, to be held in Chennai between January 7 and 9, 2009.
Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, briefing reporters on the preparations, said that the meet, in which over 1,500 delegates are expected to participate, is of special significance in the context of the global economic crisis.
The annual event which was started in 2003 is being held for the first time in Chennai.
Leading industry representatives, technocrats and policy makers will be addressing the convention which is to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on January 8.
The President, Pratibha Patil, will address the Valedictory on the next day. A highlight of the event would be the participation of Chief Ministers from various States.
Four plenary sessions – India as an emerging power – the diaspora factor; Reflection on the current economic crisis — diaspora concerns; Preservation of language and culture of the Indian diaspora; and Diaspora interaction with the States – would be organised.
Regional sessions on Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, US, the Gulf, the Caribbean and Canada are also being organised.
