The Kerala government’s annual international meet to strengthen the state’s coir industry is set for its third edition next year. Coir Kerala 2013, scheduled to take place in Alappuzha from February 1-5, is expected to attract up to 150 international participants from 75 countries and around 200 domestic buyers.

It will build on the success of the 2012 edition, which saw 74 international and 140 national buyers take part, with around 150 exhibitors showcasing coir and natural fibre products, services and technologies. The fair is estimated to have helped increase sales through exports by Rs 200 crore and the domestic market by Rs 400 crore.

A dedicated website for Coir Kerala 2013 was launched by chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Coir Kerala is supported by the Ministry of Commerce. Since its inception, the event has managed to achieve one of its key objectives of turning Alappuzha into a globally known centre of coir and carpet trade.

The export market for coir has risen to Rs 1,150 crore and the domestic market share is estimated at around Rs 2,500 crore.

The Thiruvananthapuram-based National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) has been entrusted with the task of coordinating Coir Kerala 2013.

The event which will feature exhibitions, seminars and buyer-seller meets with the opportunity of one-to-one interactions. Other promotional events such as competitions for schoolchildren and skill contests for coir workers will also be held.
