Kolkata, Dec 13 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court Thursday allowed the plea of cargo handling company Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT) to remove its machinery and equipment from the Haldia Dock complex.

Permitting the removal of the machinery, Justice Sanjib Banerjee directed the appointment of two special officers to oversee the removal of the machineries and allowed six weeks for removal of the cranes and two weeks for other machineries.

The court in the process also rejected the plea by the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) seeking permission to retain HBT's equipment till the arbitration process for the breach of contract against the cargo handler was over.

HBT, jointly promoted by ABG group of India and French logistics company LDA, had pleaded for permission to remove the machinery following its announcement Oct 31 to immediately exit from the dock citing unsafe work conditions.

Following a prolonged labour impasse, (HBT), which was operating mechanised berths two and eight at the Haldia Dock Complex in East Midnapore district, had announced it would quit the state.

Citing breach of contract by HBT, the KoPT had sought to retain its machinery and equipment.
