The phone, GVC-3000, which would be priced between Rs 23,000 and Rs 25, 000 would be available in the market in September, the company said. D-Link said it is targeting the small and medium business and the small office home office segment for this product.

The phone can be used for personal video communication, the company added. It can also be used for conducting small video conferences by connecting it to a television set or a projector. Within two months, the company plans to launch another model that would have third party video-conferencing facility.

The phone is substantially cheaper than the imported videophones available in India, said Mr Jangoo Dalal, CEO and Managing Director. Also, the phone can function with a minimum bandwidth of 128 kbps, while most of the imported phones are bandwidth-hungry, he added. The phone proves that it is possible to bring out products for India from India, said Mr Dalal. He said the product has been conceived, developed and marketed in India.

Made in India

He said the R&D work for the phone has been done at the company’s R&D centre in Bangalore that has been working on VoIP and convergence technology. The manufacturing has been done at the Goa plant.

Dalal said the company expects to sell around 10,000 phones by the end of December 2009. The product would account for 10 to 15 per cent of the company’s over-all top-line by December 2009, he added.

Dalal said the company is getting feelers from its channel partners that customers are deferring purchase decisions.
