Preliminary reports show that no nuclear plants in the European Union need to be immediately closed, although overall safety can be improved in several areas.

First indications of the stress tests in the wake of March's Fukushima nuclear disaster published Thursday showed that the EU nations must work on common standards, design and operation of plants.

The 143 nuclear plants will also be checked early next year by independent peers and a summit of government leaders will assess the final reports next June.

EU leaders agreed to put the reactors through the toughest security checks possible to gauge their ability to withstand accidents and natural disasters.
