A significant fall was witnessed in the movement of iron ore cargo -- 0.27 million tonne as against 2.14 million tonne in the year ago period. Coal, on the other hand, declined to 9.89 million tonne as against 9.95 million tonne in the previous year.
However, the impact of iron ore decline was largely mitigated by focusing on and increasing the handling of cargos like fertilisers and agri-commodities, port sources said.
The decline was also due to subdued volumes of coal in March resulting from floods in Australian coal mines. However, with coal shipments resuming from Australia, it will see a substantial increase over the next two months, they said.
