A House committee chairman is renewing his criticism of the bonuses paid to senior executives at the Veterans Affairs Department.

Rep. Jeff Miller, who is chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, called on the VA Thursday to recoup a nearly $63,000 bonus given to an official who oversaw a Pittsburgh hospital where an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease killed five veterans.

VA regional director Michael Moreland received the government's top award for senior executives at a ceremony last weekend. Moreland oversees numerous VA medical centers in Pennsylvania.

Miller says he wants the VA to conduct a review of its performance appraisal system. The American Legion is also critical.

The VA says it will conduct a review of Moreland's nomination and will take any appropriate action necessary.
