House group finalizing immigration bill

A group of Republicans and Democrats in the House is finalizing a sweeping immigration bill to further tighten border security, provide more work permits to foreigners and offer the eventual prospect of citizenship to millions of immigrants living in the United States illegally.

A congressional aide says the bill also would require employers to verify the legal status of their workers electronically.

The effort has been overshadowed by negotiations in the Senate, which is expected to act first on immigration legislation and likely offer a quicker path to citizenship to 11 million people who either crossed into the U.S. illegally or stayed beyond their visas.

One lawmaker involved says the House bill should be ready in the next week or two. The Senate bill also might be unveiled next week.
