How the major stock indexes fared Monday

's helped push the Dow Jones industrial average higher. Hewlett Packard also advanced. That offset the worrying news from Europe that Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti had resigned suddenly. Monti, who has been credited with restoring confidence in the nation's economy, said he would step down after former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's party dropped its support for his government.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 14.75, or 0.1 percent, to 13,169.88.

The S&P rose 0.48, or 0.03 percent, to 1,418.55.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 8.92, or 0.3 percent, to 2,986.96.

For the year:

The Dow is up 952.32, or 7.8 percent.

The S&P is up 160.95, or 12.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 381.81, or 14.7 percent.
