How the major US stock indexes fared on Tuesday

&T led the Dow Jones industrial average higher after reporting better-than-expected profit. 3M rose sharply after delivering an impressive quarterly report. Chocolate maker Hershey and regional bank Regions Financial helped boost the Standard & Poor's 500 index after both companies beat Wall Street's expectations.

The Dow closed up 74.39 points, or 0.6 percent, at 13,001.56.

The S&P 500 rose 5.03 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,371.97.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 8.85 points to 2,961.60.

For the week so far:

The Dow is down 27.70 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 6.56 points, or 0.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 38.85 points, or 1.3 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 784.00 points, or 6.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 114.37 points, or 9.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 356.45 points, or 13.7 percent.
