High priest of gold
Well over 100 years ago - in 1909 to be precise - a temple priest from Kumbakonam moved to Thrissur and ventured into the textile business. The journey thus begun has reached its apogee now with the grandson of the priest TS Kalyanaraman, the owner of Kalyan Jewellers, rocketing to become India's richest jeweller.
In the Wealth-X list of India's wealthiest jewellers released recently, Kalyanraman (67) with $1.3 billion against his name is one of three billionaire jewellers in the country.
A single showroom in Thrissur launched with a Rs 75 lakh investment in 1993 has now mushroomed into a gold jewellery chain that is currently spread across 83 showrooms in India, UAE and Kuwait.
