Software major Infosys Ltd has sought the approval of the union ministry of company affairs (MCA) on the appointment of Rohan Murty as executive assistant to his father, chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy, a spokesperson said Sunday.
"We have sought the approval as appointment of relatives of board members needs to be approved by the ministry. As Rohan has joined as an employee, we sought the approval, though not mandatory, to avoid any controversy in future," a company spokesperson told IANS here.
The 30-year-old Rohan joined the company June 1, when his father, the 67-year-old Murthy, returned to steer the IT bellwether as chairman, almost two years after he stepped down from the executive post.
Since Murthy also returned to the board as a whole-time director, his son's appointment as his executive assistant in the chairman's office required a formal approval of the ministry.
The spokesperson, however, declined to comment on media reports that Rohan would be re-designated as vice-president.
"Rohan's new designation, if any, will be notified after the process of his appointment as executive assistant to the chairman is completed," the official added.
The appointment of Murthy and his son for five years with a token salary of Re.1 per annum was ratified by the company's shareholders at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) Aug 3 here.
Rohan, who holds a PhD from Harvard University in the US, took a sabbatical from that university, where he is a junior fellow in the Society of Fellows, to join the company his father co-founded 32 years ago with four others, including vice-chairman S. Gopalakrishnan and chief executive S.D. Shibulal.
