Brigader Dr Kapil Mohan, 88, who launched the iconic 'Old Monk' rum, passed away on January 6, according to social media.
The Chairman and Managing Director of Mohan Meakin Ltd passed away following a massive heart attack in Ghaziabad's Mohan Nagar.
Other famous liquor brands Padmashree Mohan was involved with included Solan No. 1 and Golden Eagle.
For a man who made his name with liquor, the late Brigadier was a teetotaller. He had handed over the reins at Mohan Meakin to his nephews Hemant and Vinay, though he remained the Chairman and MD till the end.
With Old Monk emerging as a military canteen favourite from the time of its launch, it remain India's favourite liquor brand till the mid-2000s, despite zero advertising.
Sad to hear of the passing of Brig Kapil Mohan -- and it does unreported in the news media! He is the man who ran Mohan Meakin and the face beind the Old Monk rum brand that is global. Remember meeting him for a family feud story. This is the stuff of business history.— Madhavan Narayanan (@madversity) January 8, 2018
There's more history to the company. Called Dyer Meakin Breweries till the mid-60s, it had been formed by the merger of two breweries, E Dyer (set up in 1855) & Meakin (set up in 1887) & bought by the Mohans post 1947. E Dyer was the father of Col. Dyer of Jallianwala Bagh fame! https://t.co/xOmSXwHyPe— Vivek Sengupta (@vsengupta) January 8, 2018
