
Chennai: Aiming to increase research in nanotechnology, the Centre will set up three national institutes in different parts of the country.
Speaking at the inauguration of a three-day international conference on Nano Science & Technology, Secretary in the Department of Science & Technology T Ramasami said "National Institutes for Research in Nanotechnology and Nano Sciences will come up at Bangalore, Kolkata and Mohali". Ramasami said the Department was going to launch major areas of research in nanotechnology.
The United States spends about $1 billion for research on nanotechnology, he said adding the department has set aside Rs 1,000 crore for a period of five years for a Nano Mission. "We have already invested Rs 500 crore for this," he said.
Nanotechnology was an exciting subject with wonderful possibilities in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology and Agriculture, National Research Professor in Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research C N Rao said.
He said India was playing a major role in the nanotechnology revolution that was taking place across the world.
Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar said exciting things have started to happen in the field of nanotechnology and listed out a few developments in nanotechnology undertaken by the Baba Atomic Research Centre and Indira Gandh Centre for Atomic Research.
