: About 89,000 Ford Escape small SUVs and Fusion midsize cars from the 2013 model year equipped with 1.6-liter turbocharged engines.
THE PROBLEM: A computer-controlled valve can let coolant into the engine, and in rare cases it can become trapped and overheat. That can cause a gasket to blow, spilling coolant or oil onto the hot exhaust and touching off a fire. There have been nine fires reported so far in the U.S. and Canada. No one has been hurt.
THE SOLUTION: Ford will update software to stop the problem from happening. It already has recalled the vehicles, urging drivers to bring them to dealers and swap them for a free loaner car. The software will be available starting early next week.
