The Income-tax department has issued advertisements in leading national dailies on Wednesday urging taxpayers to link their Aadhar with their PAN (Permanent Account Number) through SMS.
The advertisement describes how individuals can link their identities by sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161.
In order to avoid mismatches, the department will be sending OTPs (One-Time Passwords) to the registered mobile number submitted by the taxpayer while applying for Aadhar.
Taxpayers who wish to do the linking online can do so on the Income Tax Department's website.
Linking the two identities has been made mandatory for e-filing of IT returns.
The department believes that the linking will be a key to "seamlessly avail online, a world of income tax facilities."
A 12-digit Aadhar number has been made mandatory for applying for Permanent Account Number from July 1 2017.
