Pete Lau confirms OnePlus 7 to arrive with 5G phone in 2019

OnePlus' Chief Pete Lau confirmed that OnePlus 7, the next flagship device from the Chinese company would arrive with support for 5G networks.

Lau made the positive-looking statements at the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai.

He said that talks for a partnership with US telecom companies were on-going.

Although 5G networks are yet to be fully operational in India, Indian telecom companies such as Jio and Airtel have both been reported of testing 5G networks. Airtel along with Huawei had reportedly tested its MIMI or 5G capable network in New Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. Reliance Jio has also reportedly tested its new technology in a couple of markets.

A 5G network can offer unexpectedly faster internet bandwidth. 5G is expected to boost downloads speeds up to 10 GBPS, or 30-50 times faster than 4G networks. A full HD movie can be downloaded in a matter of seconds and latency times are expected to come down.

Lau said at the MWC that OnePlus fans expected as roll-out in October'19. A quick Google search reveals the following launch timlines of previous OnePlus devices.

  • OnePlus 3- 14 June 2016
  • OnePlus 3T- 15 November 2016
  • OnePlus 5- 20 June 2017
  • OnePlus 5T- November 2017
  • OnePlus 6- 22 May 2018

The new OnePlus 7 could therefore release in the month of May'19, but a 6T version could arrive in the month of November'18.

The company has launched a 8GB RAM/256 GB storage variant without a Marvel branding a few days back at a price of RS 43,999. Speculators have so far said that the 6T version could have pop-up cameras, but specs and a body form similar to the 6. There could be some shifts on the display front. OnePlus in its most recent media interactions has maintained that its release dates will remain consistent.

Besides the 5G capabilities, Lau also confirmed that the company promises to offer software maintenance schedule with 2 years of Android updates, and 3 years of security updates.
