The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has entrusted Coimbatore-based Epic Energy Ltd with the preparation of master plan to make Amritsar and Ludhiana "solar cities". The consultant is likely to submit its report by March 2010. After submission of the master plan, the state government will approach the Centre for approval of the plan and for funds.
The master plan prepared by a consultant will set a goal of minimum 10 per cent reduction in projected total demand of conventional energy at the end of five years, to be achieved through energy saving by energy efficiency measures and generation from renewable energy installations. Further, the program on ‘Development of Solar Cities’ would support and encourage urban local bodies to prepare a road map to guide their cities in becoming ‘renewable energy cities’ or ‘solar cities’ or ‘eco-green cities’.
Speaking to Business Standard, PEDA director, Balour Singh said, "We have appointed Coimbatore-based Epic Energy Ltd, for preparation of master plan of Amritsar and Ludhiana. The consultant will prepare master plan for these cities which will include complete information about the population of the city, energy consumption by domestic household, commercial establishments and industries."
It is expected that within a period of three months after award of tender the master plan will be ready.
