The consistent increase in the arhtiya commission in Punjab in the past few years eroded the real income of farmers. In a seminar on Agriculture in Punjab, Punjab Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal said that a farmer takes home only 16 per cent of the income from the produce. The board, he said, charges 2 per cent market fee and does development, where as the arhtiyas despite charging 2.5 per cent commission, do not utilise any amount for the benefit of the farmers.
