The Sensex, which rose to 16,001.31 in the final hour, ended at 15,884.87 (provisional) with a gain of 27.79 points or 0.18%.
The Nifty closed at 4761.25, up 11.30 points or 0.24%.
FMCG, oil and bank stocks moved higher. Pharma and automobile stocks found some support in late afternoon trades.
Metal, IT and consumer durables stocks ended on a mixed note.
