The market opened on a firm note and ended with solid gains once again, shrugging off a mild setback it suffered around noon.
Hindustan Unilever sparkled again, with strong results and an open offer from parent Unilever Plc triggering hectic buying at the counter.
The Sensex ended at 19489.57 (provisional) with a gain of around 102 points or 0.53%.
The Nifty closed at 5924.85, up 20.75 points or 0.35%.
Several other FMCG stocks too ended on a firm note.
Pharma, metal and automobile stocks ended higher.
Select IT and power stocks also closed higher.
Capital goods, bank and oil stocks declined but ended off their lows.
Realty stocks closed lower on profit taking.
While midcap stocks saw some buying, smallcaps were mostly subdued.
The market breadth was slightly weak.
