The Sensex ended at 19,733.76 (provisional) with a gain of 229.58 points or 1.18%.
The Nifty closed at 6002.45, up 72.25 points or 1.22%.
IT stocks, led by heavyweights Infosys, TCS and Wipro, traded firm right through the session.
Realty, capital goodsand bank stocks mostly ended on a firm note.
Power, oil, FMCG and consumer durables stocks too closed higher.
Select pharma stocks moved up.
Automobile stocks edged up after a weak start, but failed to hold at higher levels, amid mixed sales data.
Metal stocks were mostly subdued.
Midcap and smallcap stocks had a fairly good outing.
The market breadth was positive.
