Amid alternate bouts of buying and selling in blue chip stocks, the Sensex remains in negative territory with a modest loss this morning. With global cues not any significantly positive and no prominent triggers from the home front to buoy up sentiment, the mood remains quite cautious so far this morning.

The Sensex is down 34.74 points or 0.2% at 17,606.34 at present. The Nifty is down with a loss of 13.55 points or 0.26% at 5261.30.
PSU stocks continue to trade firm. A host of stocks from the metal space - most of them are part of the PSU index as well - are also trading notably higher. Consumer durables, banking and capital goods sectors have a few gainers in their ranks.
Information technology, realty, FMCG, oil and pharmaceuticals stocks are exhibiting some weakness. Midcap and smallcap stocks are having a fairly good session.
ACC has lost nearly 2.5% at Rs 959. HDFC is down with a loss of 1.85%. Hero Honda, ONGC, Tata Consultancy Services, DLF and Wipro are trading lower by 1% - 1.5%. Mahindra & Mahindra, ITC, Infosys Technologies, Reliance Communications, Hindustan Unilever, NTPC and Grasim Industries are also trading weak.
Reliance Infrastructure is up 1.6% at Rs 1146. Sterlite Industries is up with a gain of 1.2%. Tata Motors, Tata Power, BHEL, Maruti Suzuki, ICICI Bank, Tata Steel, State Bank of India, Larsen & Toubro and Jaiprakash Associates are up with modest gains.
Midcap stocks National Fertilizers, STC, Gujarat Minerals, Bombay Dyeing, Kirloskar Brothers, Jai Corp and Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers are up 5% - 9% over their previous closing levels.
HMT, Gammon India, Dish TV India, State Bank of Mysore, Coromandel International, Infotech Enterprises, Gillette, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Gammon Infrastructure, Nava Bharat Ventures, State Bank of Travancore, Patel Engineering, Indian Overseas Bank and Exide Batteries are among the other prominent gainers in the Midcap index.
In the smallcap index, Solvay Pharma, Walchandnagar Industries, Subhash Projects, ITI, Kalyani Steel, Sundaram Fasteners, Madhucon Projects, Kolte Patil Developers, Numeric Power Systems, City Union Bank and Gemini Communications are some of the major gainers this morning.
