After trading modestly down till around noon, the market faltered and plunged deep into the red due to a heavy sell-off in the final hour.
The Sensex ended at 18,777.55 (provisional) with a loss of 263.40 points or 1.38%.
The Nifty closed at 5664.90, down 83.20 points or 1.45%.
Realty, automobile, capital goods and metal stocks declined sharply.
Bank and oil stocks too mostly ended with sharp losses.
IT, consumer durables and PSU stocks closed weak as well.
FMCG, power and pharmaceutical stocks found some support, but still ended off their highs.
Midcap and smallcap stocks retreated after a fairly good spell in positive territory.
The market breadth was slightly negative.
