Mumbai, Jan 24 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets was trading flat in late afternoon trade Thursday as automobile, capital goods and metal stocks plummeted.
The BSE Sensex, which opened at 20,017.20 points, was at 19,934.16 points around 1 p.m. -- down 92.45 points or 0.46 percent from its previous close at 20,026.61 points.
The BSE Sensex touched an intra-day high of 20,072.28 points and a low of 19,884.20 points. The BSE midcap index was down 113.99 points, while the smallcap index was lower by 103.60 points.
The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was down 30.55 points or 0.50 percent at 6,023.75 points.
In terms of losers, automobile index was down 310.61 points, while the capital goods index was down 115.61 points and metal index was lower by 81.54 points.
Among major gainers, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) index was higher by 50.13 points, followed by information technology (IT) index which was up 33 points.
Among other Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei was up 1.28 percent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was lower by 0.16 percent and China's Shanghai Composite Index was lower by 0.79 percent.
