The Sensex, which was moving in a very narrow range for well over a couple of hours, has edged higher with buying in blue chip stocks gathering a slight momentum. Though Asian markets are not any significantly positive, stocks back home are seen trading firm with a fair amount of buying happening on short-covering ahead of November series derivatives expiry.
At 17,284.98, the Sensex is now up 153.90 points or 0.9% over its previous closing mark. The Nifty is up 0.82% or 41.60 points at 5132.15.

Reliance Industries, which moved up sharply in early trades, is up 1.9% at Rs 2217. The stock remained sticky around Rs 2222 for a fairly long time today. ITC, Hero Honda, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Sterlite Industries,Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel, ACC, HDFC Bank and Infosys Technologies are also trading firm.

Among the losers in the Sensex, DLF is down by 1.4% at Rs 367.70. Sun Pharmaceuticals has lost 0.6%. NTPC, Larsen & Toubro and ICICI Bank are down 0.2% - 4% from their previous closing levels, while Reliance Infrastructure, Jaiprakash Associates and HDFC are down marginally.
Areva T&D has moved up nearly 6% to Rs 296 on strong volumes. On BSE, the Areva counter has recorded a volume of 7.77 lakh shares today, far higher than an average daily volume of around 1.09 lakh shares. Last month, the company had signed a Rs 900 crore alliance agreement for 36 substations with Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd.
Bajaj Hindustan, another stock to have clocked strong volumes today, is up nearly 4% at Rs 222. On BSE, around 12.15 lakh shares have changed hands at the Bajaj Hindustan counter today.
JSW Steel rose to a new 52-week high at Rs 1039.80 this afternoon. At Rs 1036, the stock is up 3.75% at present.
M&M Financial Services has surged 6.5% to Rs 304 on impressive volumes. The M&M Financial Services counter on BSE has clocked a volume of 2.7 laksh shares today.
Kalpataru Power Transmission is down marginally at Rs 916. On BSE, over 30,500 shares have been traded at the counter so far in the day, much higher than an average volume of around 4,400 shares.
