Indian banker and environmental economist Pavan Sukhdev is the latest goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Sukhdev is a visiting fellow of Yale University and founder and chief executive officer of GIST Advisory Private Limited, a consulting firm that helps governments and corporations to understand and better mange their impacts on natural and human capital. He has spent over 20 years working at ANZ Bank and Deutsche Bank.

Sukhdev now joins celebrities like French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen and American actor Don Cheadle in raising awareness of and support for environmental causes.

UNEP executive director Achim Steiner announced Sukhdev has been named as the new goodwill ambassador at a press conference held on the sidelines of the global Convention on Biological Diversity here on Wednesday.

“He is a shining example of the growing trend that has seen the private sector begin to incorporate sustainability concerns into their operational models,” Steiner said.

Sukhdev emphasised that governments and business needed to understand that our ecosystems, biodiversity and natural resources were the backbone of our economies and their value should be integrated into decision making.

“Biodiversity is not really the luxury of the rich, it is the necessity for the poor,” he added.
