Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone maker, has announced the launch its Redmi 1S smartphone at Rs 5999. The Redmi 1S, which was unveiled earlier this year, will be a direct competitor to the Moto G.
The phone, like the Mi 3, will be available exclusively through online retailer, Flipkart. People interested in buying the Redmi will have to register on Flipkart, for the first flash sale which will be held on September 2. The registrations will be open from 6pm on August 26.
Operating system: Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) with MIUI v5 skin
Display: 4.7-inch 720p IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection (Interestingly, the Moto E and Moto G have Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, while the Redmi 1S has an older Gorilla Glass 2 version.)
Processor: 1.6GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor with 1GB RAM
Storage: 8GB internal storage; expandable storage of upto 64GB with microSD card slot
Camera: 8MP rear camera with LED flash and a 1.6MP front camera
Connectivity: 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB 2.0
Sim slot: dual sim functionality (GSM + GSM)
Although the Redmi 1S will have an older version of Android (Jelly Bean, 4.3) out-of-the-box, it will reportedly receive the Android L update.
Xiaomi entered the Indian market last month, with the Mi 3 smartphone. The phone, which offered hardware similar to that of the Nexus 5 at half the price, sold out within seconds, in numerous flash sales on Flipkart. The online retailer also received considerable flak for underestimating the demand for the phone and resulting in a crash of its website.
