Director M. Raja is receiving a lot of appreciation for delivering yet another hit with Santhosh Subramaniam. He is a relieved man as we catch up with him for a quick chatÖ
What is the response to the film?
The audience response has been overwhelming. Kids, Ladies and youth are enjoying the film and my phone has not stopped ringing. KB sir, so many people whom I respect in the industry and even common man on the road are congratulating me for giving a clean family film. Everybody seems to have liked the last confrontation scene between the father and son.
Was it difficult to live up to the expectations while remaking a blockbuster from other language?
Yes certainly. It was a challenge for me since Ravi has had a long gap after Deepavali. A yearís gap is too long for a young hero. But this film has given him a big boost and we are all happy.
Why did you decide to go for Genelia who had done the original?
She is perfect for the role. I could not think of any other actress who could do justice to Hasini. Her energy level is amazing. She added so many small nuances to her character which paid off .
What was the toughest part of the project?
Itís not an action film which is easier to remake. This has a sensitive subject of an over possessive father and a son who loves him too much but needs an outlet too. Genelia plays an extrovert and Ravi is an introvert, total opposite in character. Every characterization had to be done sensibly and sensitively. My friend Bhasker told everyone in Andhra that only Raja can do justice to this remake and I am so glad its come out so well. The most challenging part was to do justice to the original which has one 7 Nandi awards and is among the top ten films in AP.
Why did you repeat the name Santhosh for Ravi?
Kids call him Santhosh after Something SomethingÖand donít even know his real name. So I wanted to continue with that and it worked.
In two weeks you will know my next project. Talks are on with two heroes. Ravi is busy with two other films so I wonít get his dates right now.
