One-day internationals: Debut v Sri Lanka, Sharjah, 1990. 271 matches, 337 wickets @ 30.89, best bowling 6-12, 938 runs @ 10.53.

Tests: Debut v England, Manchester, 1990. 113 matches, 547 wickets @ 28.65, best bowling 10-74, 2,049 runs @ 17.21, four fifties.

* A qualified mechanical engineer, Kumble is India's most successful one-day and Test bowler and fourth highest wicket-taker in Test history behind Australian Shane Warne, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan and Australia's Glenn McGrath.

* Named Wisden cricketer of the year in 1996.

* In 1999, became only the second bowler after England off-spinner Jim Laker to take 10 wickets in a Test innings, against Pakistan.

* Captained India in a one-day international, against England in Chennai in January 2002.

* Is only the second player after Shane Warne to have taken more than 500 wickets and scored over 2,000 runs in Tests.

* Kumble has performed considerably better in India, picking up 325 Test wickets @ 23.71 compared to 222 wickets @ 35.89 overseas.

* Played only 30 one-dayers after being dropped for the 2003 World Cup final, but was picked for the 2007 tournament after taking 23 wickets to help India to their first Test series win in the West Indies in 35 years.

* Displayed grit when he sent down 10 overs and took the wicket of Brian Lara with his face bandaged after suffering a broken jaw while facing West Indies paceman Mervyn Dillon on the 2002 Test tour.
