Thiruvananthapuram: Noted Malayalam writer P Ayyaneth, whose works shocked 'custodians' of conventional morality, died in a hospital here on Tuesday of injuries suffered in a road accident on Monday.

He was 79 and is survived by wife and two children.

Ayyaneth was hit by a scooter while he was crossing the road near his house in Kumarapuram in the city.

He was taken to the Medical College Hospital, where he allegedly did not receive timely attention for a serious head injury he sustained in the accident. He was later taken to a private hospital.

A popular novelist, Pathros Ayyaneth's novels and short stories sold like hot cakes but critics often ignored him as a writer of 'soft porns'.

His widely read novels included Manushya Nee Mannakunnu,Thiruseshippu, and Vazhvemayam. Some of them had been made into films.

A prolific writer, he had penned 40 novels, 10 short story collections, a few plays and articles.

Many of his novels appeared as serials in periodicals in 1960s and 70s.
