Superstar Rajinikanth and Shankar’s magnum opus 2.0 has secured a good opening in Tamil Nadu.
Early estimates and film trade say that the film is said to have grossed around 18-20 crores on Day-one (approximate) in Tamil Nadu. In the state, Vijay’s Sarkar holds the all-time day one record by grossing nearly 30 crores. Sources add that 2.0 also falls short to Vijay’s previous film, Mersal Day-one collection in Tamil Nadu.
Trade pundits say that as Thursday, Nov 29 (opening day) was a working day, the opening of the film was not up to the mark. Moreover, Lyca Productions’ marketing and promotion strategies were not aggressive as Sun Pictures and Thenandal, producers of Sarkar and Mersal respectively (both these films released for Diwali weekends).
The back to back box office failures of Rajinikanth (Kaala and Kabali) is also considered to be one of the main reasons on why 2.0 couldn’t break Sarkar and Mersal Day-one collections in Tamil Nadu.
However, distributors and theater owners feel that the film (with mixed reviews & word-of-mouth) will gain momentum this week-end.
