They may not have been huge commercial success, but most of them have been able to recover their cost of production and some a small profit. These films were made on a shoe-string budget and reached across thanks to digital filmmaking.
The cost of filmmaking has come down to one third that of traditional filmmaking by using digital cameras and doing post-production in digital studios. And today 90% of screening in Cinema theatres in Tamil Nadu is through digital system, which has also ensured theatrical release for some of these films.
And the boom in multiplexes in the urban markets of TN, the famous 3C`s –Chennai, Chengalpet & Coimbatore has also helped. The 3C`s garner around 30- 35 % of total theatrical net in the state.
The urban audiences played a major role in the transformation of Tamil cinema, mainly due to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Today reviews on social networking sites appear within minutes of a film`s release. They are taken more seriously than print reviews.
These small films made on a budget of Rs 1.25 to Rs 1.75 Crore made mostly by debutants with newcomers in the lead. The success of these films show that Tamil Nadu audiences are looking at something different and content is king.
