Although many composers made their mark in 2017, Sify.com picks the top 5 composers who made their presence felt during the year. Following are the picks of composers in 2017:
Albums: Kaatru Veliyidai, Mersal
No year is complete without a Rahman feast! Last year, ARR delivered one of the coolest soundtracks in ‘Accham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada’. This year, ARR started off with his mentor’s project ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’ & nobody extracts better work from ARR than Mani Ratnam. The results showed in the album which was loaded with refreshingly structured songs. Songs like ‘Azhagiye’ & ‘Sarattu Vandila’ rose up the charts very fast whereas tracks like ‘Vaan’ & ‘Nallai Allai’ were vintage Rahman. The ace composer followed up ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’ with Atlee-Vijay’s ‘Mersal’. Although the soundtrack got mixed reviews from the critics, the songs worked big time with the visuals & turned out to be quite popular post the release of the movie. In one of the easiest picks of this year, ARR is pretty much the numero uno composer!
Albums: Rum, Velaikaaran, Vivegam
Anirudh started off the year with the small yet experimental ‘Rum’. Tracks like ‘Hola Amigo’ had elements from the latin music & it was good to see Anirudh extending his repertoire with an innovative album. The young composer followed up with ‘Vivegam’ which was supposed to be his biggest project till date. Under enormous expectations from the fans, the composer delivered chartbuster after chartbuster with tracks like ‘Surviva’, ‘Thalai Viduthalai’ & ‘Never Give Up’. The composer ended the year with ‘Velaikaaran’ where he reunited with his usual associate Sivakarthikeyan followed by a hit single ‘Sodakku’ from ‘Thaana Serndha Kootam’. The grapevine is that the composer might be doing the music for ‘Indian 2’ & that raises the stakes for next year too.
Albums: Chennai 2 Singapore, Magalir Mattum, Theeran Adhigaram Ondru, Adhey Kangal, Aramm, Maayavan
If there is one composer right now in Kollywood who is very versatile at a very young age, then it has to be Ghibran. Ghibran has the distinction of being the music composer of 6 solid films in 2017 in varied genres & all of them got critically acclaimed. The audio launch of ‘Chennai 2 Singapore’ happened in a very innovative way where the composer travelled to multiple countries to launch every song from the album. While the album was very youth-centric & urbane, the composer followed it up with serious films like ‘Aramm’ & ‘Magalir Mattum’ as well. His music also supported some solid films like cop drama ‘Theeran Adhigaram Ondru’ & the thriller ‘Adhey Kangal’. On the whole, a solid year for Ghibran!
Albums: Vikram Vedha, Puriyadha Pudhir
Relatively new entrant C.S Sam surprised everybody with a fantastic album in ‘Vikram Vedha’ where the composer showed great maturity in balancing between providing chartbusters & sticking to providing music for the plotline. The album reaped up lot of critical acclaim & the re-recording was unanimously praised as well. He followed up that movie with the Vijay Sethupathy thriller ‘Puriyadha Pudhir’. Although long-in-the-making, the movie had some really good commercial music with super addictive tracks like ‘Mazhaikulle’ & ‘Vellai Kanavu’. This composer is here to stay!
Hip Hop Thamizha
Albums: Kavan, Meesaya Murukku
KV Anand surprised everyone by signing up Hip Hop Aadhi for his ‘Kavan’ & the composer surprised us by delivering some foot tapping music. Although not entirely loaded with plenty of chartbusters, the album had its moments in songs like ‘Oxygen’ & ‘Theeradha Vilayatu Pillai’. The composer followed it up with ‘Meesaya Murukku’ which was received greatly by the youngsters especially. The composer has vastly improved from where he started off & has now started experimenting in his music style which is always a good thing.
