If you haven't heard of Gangnam Style yet, you probably live in a cave with no Internet or in North Korea. The song, by a South Korean singer called Psy, has become a huge hit across the world after turning viral on Youtube with over 400 million views so far.
Critical acclaim followed in a short while with a nomination for Best Video at the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards. And then a honour by Guinness World Records as the most 'liked' video in Youtube.
The popularity of the song shot up in India after West Indies cricket team performed the dance moves after winning the Twenty20 World Cup.
As we've seen with viral hits on Youtube like Rebecca Black's Friday, Kolaveri Di and others before, Gangnam Style has also inspired many copycat videos which are either tributes, pastiches or parodies.
Let's take a look at some of the more successful Gangnam Style videos which caught our eye:
If you don't speak Korean, Gangnam Style's lyrics probably sounds like gibberish to you. You might be surprised to know that it is quite a smart song which is a social commentary on the flashy lifestyles of the people who live in the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea.
Hongdae is another region in Seoul which features in this version called Hongdae Style. The unnamed singer does a fine job of giving Hongdae the Gangnam Style treatment.
Psy - London Style
The trend went international quickly and London was quick to catch on. It features well known places in London, but it is a more fun video than the original. There's probably no commentary on the lifestyle of Londoners in this video.
Oppa Indian Style
Well, this version is not completely desi. Oppa Indian Style is made by an Indian in Singapore, but it’s quite hilarious nonetheless.
Covering locations in Little India, the singer Jason Raj makes his own version of the song which is a little off-tune but wholly amusing.
Deadpool vs Gangnam Style
And now on to other versions of the song which are not country related. Here's one for the geeks called Deadpool vs Gangnam Style.
Deadpool is the wise cracking antihero from Marvel Comics and the video features a guy dressed as him, going around town annoying people with his pelvic thrusts. The video is hilarious, with a Candid Camera feel to it.
Gangnam Style by Waveya Korean dance team
This version has pretty, young Asian women dancing to the song. No further description required.
PSY - Gangnam Style (Acoustic Cover by Ra-On)
Would the Gangnam Style song work as a slow, acoustic version?
Well, here's a group of Korean-Americans called Ra-On performing a soulful version of the song. And it is surprisingly good.
That completes our round-up of the different versions of Gangnam Style worth listening to. As the song continues to gain popularity, more versions will surface online. Is there an amazing version that we missed? Let us know in the comments!
