But now we realise it was all part of a big plan.
"Everyone goes through phases in life and change is the only constant," said Ameesha. "If you don't change, if you don't keep up with times, if you don't try and bring newness, then you become stagnant, especially as an actor."
And keeping up with the times - even sartorially - seems to have worked for her. She was recently seen in Race 2, and will feature in upcoming films Shortcut Romeo, Run Bhola Run and Bhaiyyaji Superhitt.
Ameesha's also got her maiden production venture, Desi Magic, off the floor. The film stars Zayed Khan, Randhir Kapoor and Ameesha.
Directed by ad-filmmaker Mehul Atha, Desi Magic screenplay is by director Sanjay Gadhvi (of Dhoom fame).
The stars recently got together to launch Desi Magic with loads of champagne, songs and laughter. Here's a look at some pictures from the party.
