The Raid: Redemption, an Indonesian film that released in the rest of the world this year, takes the title of the best action film of 2012. Like most martial arts cinema, this film also features little plotwise and concentrates on the action instead.
The setup is simple. An apartment complex has long been ruled by a mobster who defies every attempt by the law to take him down. A SWAT team on a mission to neutralize the threat find themselves trapped and deprived of the element of surprise.
Director Gareth Evans brings back Iko Uwais who starred in his previous film Merantau, to take the action to the next level. This results in some of the best action scenes seen on film in a long time featuring literally bone-crunching fights between savage fighters. Guns are available, but hardly used. Look out for flying fists and swishing knives. This is one adrenaline rush of a film.
Honourable mentions: Wrath of the Titans, Expendables 2, Skyfall
