Anurag Kashyap and Abhay Deol brought Devdas and his bottle back to Bollywood. And boy, we hardly recognised him. Gone were the palatial sets (courtesy Sanjay Leela Bhansali) and the melodrama. Instead, what we got was a true slice of contemporary urban and small town life.
While Abhay was a revelation as the title character, the girls were true finds. Mahie Gill was perfect as Paro, the small town girl who tried not to let herself be barricaded behind a small town mentality. And Kalki Koechlin gave individuality and a touch of vulnerability to her role as Chandra.
The music, the psychedelic colours, the smooth way in which drinks, drugs and sex were treated had us all standing up in the aisles, applauding. Dev D is our pick for the best film of 2009.
