AB: The Legend - A Photographer's Tribute to Amitabh Bachchan (2006)
Author: Pradeep Chandra; Publisher: Rupa
The book starts with a beautiful poem by Harivansh Rai Bachchan written on the occasion of Amitabh Bachchan's birth.
This emotional beginning, full of evocative words, is certainly unexpected in a book that calls itself a 'photographer's tribute'. The foreword by Pritish Nandy further sets the tone.
That the book has beautiful candid photographs of Amitabh Bachchan (including one kissing Jaya Bachchan) would be stating the obvious. But one sorely misses the captions alongside the photos which would be a ready reference to the occasion and year of the photograph.
The captions find their way in the back pages, all listed one below the other and the task of matching the caption to the photograph is cumbersome and robs some of the joy in viewing the book.
Through the photographs, Pradeep Chandra attempts to explore the icon's career, naming some of the phases in cliched terms such as 'Rise of the Angry Young Man'.
The second half of the book has columns by celebrities like Govind Nihalani and Shobha De (her column is interestingly titled 'Will the Real Amitabh Bachchan Please Stand Up?') The book also has some interesting insights by veteran journalists who have interviewed Amitabh Bachchan over the years.
A truly interesting book that has great photographs and makes up for content through the lovely essays by noted personalities.
